My Help - Psalm 121
I love psalm 121. It is a psalm I often turn to. The question and answer of verses 1 and 2 bring me so much peace.
“I lift my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2 CEB)
My help comes from the Lord.
You know, we are one week away from celebrating Christmas. So many people say we need to remember Christ and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. Then, we focus on his birth. While his birth was indeed miraculous, a virgin impregnated by the Holy Spirit, this is not the main idea of what we are to celebrate. We are to celebrate the fact that our help came. Our salvation came. Our Savior came. Yes, he came in the form of a baby, but he came. That is why the Angels proclaimed his birth. That is why the star shone for the wise men. Not because another baby had been born, but because the Savior of the world had been born. Our help came!
We can look to a hundred different places for help. The truth is, though, until we look to the Lord we will never find our help. We will be hopelessly searching.
There is a lot of imagery in this psalm. This is called a “Psalm of Ascent.” This is one of the songs that the Jews would sing on their way up to Jerusalem to worship. They were going to worship because they knew that their help could not be found on earth, only in the Lord.
Today, we need to worship for the same reason. We need to fall to our knees in worship of Jesus, for our help can be found nowhere else.
This Christmas, as you think about the baby Jesus, think about what he stands for. What he went on to do. Think about him being our “help.” As you do, fall and worship him. He alone is worthy.
