Looking In A Mirror - Psalm 130

December 20, 2016

“If you kept track of sins, Lord - my Lord, who would stand a chance?  But forgiveness is with you - that's why you are honored.”

Psalm 130:3-4 CEB

Have you ever stopped to take a good hard look at yourself in the mirror?

What do you see?

Do you see the you that you want others to see?

Or do you see the real you?

You know, the you that has done all those things you wish you could forget.  The bad, and the “not-so-bad” things.  The you who did not do what you wish you had, and have felt guilty for not doing ever since.

As I write this we are less than one week away from Christmas.  And while my kids are getting older, I have one who still completely believes that there is one checking his list twice.  All we have to say to him right now is “what list will that end up on.”

As you think back over your life, the majority of it, which list would it end up on?  Naughty or nice?  What if we were to use the Ten Commandments as our rule?  Now what list do you end up on?  What if we would use Jesus’ continuation of the Ten Commandments as our rule?  (You know, “You have heard it said, but I say if you even think….”)  Now which list?

Truth is, we are all guilty.  Whether it be of great things or little things, all of us stand guilty before a holy God.  None of us “stands a chance.”  But lucky for us, forgiveness is with God.  It is granted through the Christ who was born in a manger and later died on a cross.  Because of this, we honor Him.

In fact, we should fall to our knees and worship him.  For when we look in a mirror, we don't see one condemned.  We see one forgiven because of a loving God.

Amazing.
