To God Be The Glory - Psalm 115
I was watching an old sitcom the other day. In this particular show one of the characters is a wannabe actor who has a part in a soap opera. He was nominated for a “Soapy” award. He was so excited. All through the episode not just that character, but all the characters kept practicing their acceptance speech for receiving awards for the “great things” they had done. It was funny. Truth is though, it was all too real.
We love to get the praise of men. Be honest, when someone notices what you have accomplished and praises you for it, why there are few things more satisfying.
You and I are nothing but vapors (see James). We are here for a bit, but then we are gone. Most of what we do, well, someone will come along and do better. A few years after we are gone our names
will be at most a footnote in some random book that no one will read.
God however, he is eternal. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. No one can top him. No one can out power him. No one can out love him. And no one can do more for you that he can. He alone created you and he alone can save you. You may be good, but God is great!
That is why the psalmist writes, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.” (Psalm 115:1 NIV)
While it is ok to be proud of what you have accomplished, never forget that the true glory and honor belong to God. Without him you could do nothing. To forget that would be a grave mistake.
You may get an award. If you do, give a good speech. But never forget, God gets the GLORY!
