"We become who we hang out with." - Napoleon Hill (American author)

If you want to be more like Jesus, there is no better place to start than hanging out with Him, the people that knew Him best, and His Father. We are setting out on this journey together in order to encourage each other, keep each other accountable, and learn from each other. I pray you see Jesus in all scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, and you get to the place where you can't go a day without hanging out with Him.

*Note 1* Remember Numbers 6 when you get to Judges 6 (at the end of April). It will make some things make more sense.

*Note 2* Mark 13:10 is interesting. If Jesus is saying that all people on earth must hear the Gospel before He returns we should be chomping at the bit to reach everyone with the Good News!

Psalm 37:30 - 40

Proverbs 10:6 - 7

The Lord proves His commands are meant to be followed, Jesus calms the seas, the good counsel of the godly, and blessings follow the godly.

**Note** When reading this passage from Leviticus I am reminded of this quote from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis, as Susan learns about the identity of the great lion, Aslan, from Mr. Beaver:

“Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion." "Ooh" said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion"..."Safe?" said Mr Beaver ..."Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.”

An all powerful God is not safe. But He defines good. And he quite literally is love. By sending Jesus he proved that love in a way we could understand and begin to share with others.

Exodus 35:10 - 36:38

Matthew 27:32 - 66

Psalm 34:1 - 10

Proverbs 9:7 - 8

The Israelites use their gifts to worship the Lord, Jesus is crucified, praising only in the Lord, and the way to deal with mockers.

*Note* Many scholars believe the moment when Jesus cries out, "My God, my God, why have You abandoned me?" is the moment at which all of man's past, present, and future sins were heaped on Jesus. That moment, not the flogging nor the hangin on the cross, but the moment that Jesus felt the entire wrath of God towards Sin, was what Jesus asked God to take away from Him when He prayed in Gethsemane. Many men have bore the torture of crucifixion, but only Jesus has had to bear the sin of all the world.

February 8 (Link to full passages)

Exodus 28:1 - 43

Matthew 25:31 - 26:13

Psalm 31:9 - 18

Proverbs 8:12 - 13

Instructions for the priestly garments, the sheep and the goats, trusting the Lord in the midst of hardship, and Wisdom states "her" loyalties.

*Note* Again, Jesus's words were radical to the Jewish people at that time. They had been heaped with so much man-made law that the idea of simply caring about people for God's glory had been lost. The parable of the sheep and the goats was another warning to those that thought they were heaven bound because of their bloodline or their "stats" as a Jew. Similarly today, our eternity is not determined by how warm we have kept a pew, but instead, by how we have shown our love for the Lord by serving His children, for His glory, not our own.

Exodus 26:1 - 27:21

Matthew 25:1 - 30

Psalm 31:1 - 8

Proverbs 8:1 - 11

Instructions for the construction of the tabernacle, keeping watch for the Lord and using what He has given us wisely, a plea for protection, and the value of wisdom.

*Note* Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4) that there will be a day  “when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem." (John 4:21b, NIV). Declaring this was a big deal partly because of what we read today in Exodus. God was very specific to the Israelites about His house and how it was to be built and furnished. Jesus turned that upside down, announcing that the heart of the worshipper would now be the dwelling of God's Spirit. Which is why we can have Nerf wars in the building at 102 Park St. and still feel safe in our salvation.

Matthew 23:13 - 39

Psalm 28:1 - 9

Proverbs 7:1 - 5

God speaks to the Israelites, straining your water yet still swallowing a camel, another plea for mercy, and loving wisdom and insight.

*Note* God lays down some rules for the Israelites. These are child's play compared to what we will find in further chapters AFTER the Israelites have messed up some more (coincidence?). As you read the commandments in Exodus 20, think about Jesus' response to the "What's the greatest commandment?" question in Matthew 22. Simplified, "Love God, Love Others" fulfills every one of the commandments God lays out. If we look at every action and thought through the lens of "Is this loving/glorifying to God and is loving towards others" we will be living right in line with those commandments and there is less to remember. :-)

God shows His power, forgiving like our Father does, the 23rd Psalm, and truth about how our sin ensnares us.

*Note* My brain doesn't fully understand it, but God chose the descendants of Abraham to be the people He would show His power through. For much of what we will read for the next two months, He shows that power in ways that seemingly contradicts the message of love, humility, and forgiveness that we are reading about in Matthew. If you are having trouble getting your mind around something, ask. Terry or I would love to help you wrap your head around the connection between the OT and NT.

*Note* Matthew 16:18: "Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means 'rock'), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it." - This is reassuring to me. Every time of human history has been full of depravity, humans were involved after all. But the Church has endured. Let's not forget this fact as we deal with the depravity around us today. Spoiler Alert: God prevails!

*Note* Hosea 6:6 is where you find the scripture Jesus quotes in Matthew 12:7.  You may remember he referenced this in chapter 9 as well. Micah 6:6-8 is another passage that nails the person that thinks they are going to earn their way to heaven to the wall. That is what Jesus was speaking against: Rule followers who ignored the hurting among God's beloved creation.
*Note* Psalm 15 shows us that apart from Christ we cannot be worthy to enter His presence.

Genesis 24:52 - 26:16

Matthew 8:18 - 34

Psalm 10:1 - 15

Proverbs 3:7 - 8

Isaac continues the line of imperfect servants of God, Jesus calms the storm, pleading to God to condemn the wicked, and a reminder not to be full of ourselves.

*Note* The Psalms such as Psalm 10 have always bothered me, but I am beginning to understand why the author would petition God that way at that time. I look at them through a lens of Jesus calling us to proclaim the Gospel to all people. It was written in the context of God using a single people group, the Israelites, to bring His name glory. We will see God use destruction to show his power as we continue through the Old Testament.

Genesis 20:1 - 22:24

Matthew 7:15 - 29

Psalm 9:1 - 12

Proverbs 2:16 - 22

The Lord keeps His promise and Abraham's faith is tested, as the song says, "They will know we are Christians by our love," praise to God for protecting the righteous, an we are reminded that Wisdom will save us from making terrible mistakes.

*Note* (Matthew 7:15-23) If you walk by an apple tree, you can tell it is an apple tree because of the apples growing on it; the apples it has provided. If you pay attention to a Christian's life, you will see a person that lives with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control (The Fruits of the Spirit - Galatians 5:22-23). If you don't see those things, remember what Jesus said at the beginning of chapter 7 and act accordingly.

Genesis 18:16 - 19:38

Matthew 6:25 - 7:14

Psalm 8:1-9

Proverbs 2:6-15

Sodom and Gomorrah, "Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs," the majestic Lord still cares for us, and the Lord grants wisdom!

*Note(s)* Genesis 18-19: Minus God's grace extended to Lot, this is a disturbing passage. Attempted rape, genocide, and incest. These are not children's stories. A better look at Chapter 19, specifically is available here

Matthew 7: "Do not judge others..." is a favorite, often misquoted, verse of the person upset over having a shortcoming pointed out. Try this: If they are not a Christian point the person to Christ. Jesus, as we have already seen in six chapters and change of a single Gospel, will do just fine in pointing out how we should live. If that person is convicted BY CHRIST (not by us), the Holy Spirit will change them.

If the person claims a relationship with Christ, sit down with them and scripture and work through it as brothers/sisters in Christ.

Genesis 16:1 - 18:15

Matthew 6:1 - 24

Psalm 7:1 - 17

Proverbs 2:1 - 5

God shows Abram and Sarai an incredible amount of grace despite their disbelief, Jesus warns us of thinking too highly of earthly treasures, a prayer for protection from enemies, and a plea to the reader to listen.

*Note* My own inkling was confirmed when I read some commentary on Genesis 16 (the Sarai, Abram, and Hagar triangle). For context, the method of using a surrogate (such as a servant) in order to bear children was not uncommon in that time. However, God had promised Abraham descendants with his wife, not her maid. We see God's graceful handling of the situation as he speaks with the newly renamed, Abraham, but He did not mince words: His intention was to provide descendants to Abraham and Sarah. *SPOILER ALERT* He does!!!

The Fall of Man, wise men and Herod's anger, the Psalmist warns of God''s anger towards those that oppose Him, and we find out where true knowledge (wisdom) comes from.
